Question about War and Peace movie(1968)and series by Sergei Bondarchuk?

Now there are series by him, four parts (1965-1957) and than movie by him (1968). Now, was those series combined into that movie (it's the same thing only combined into the movie), or is the movie really different and was filmed specially to be the movie, different than the series? Please help!

The 1968 "Voyna I Mir" is made up of four parts - as the film took such a long time to make, each part must have been released after its completion, and so the 1965 to 1967 parts I to IV. When I've seen the movie it's always been the four parts with 3 intervals (I have also seen it shown over two nights with two parts per night and an interval between them).
