New Release?

There seems to be a new release of the 1968 version of War and Peace, but I can find virtually nothing about it except the new cover art on Amazon. Does anyone here know anything about it?

I can't even find it on Amazon. Do you mean the US Amazon site? I have seen it available on the UK Amazon site, in a release from Artificial Eye, but I have no idea if this is a new release or just a repackaging of the Ruscico release. I would love to know, though!

Well, I just bought the new 3-disc version you're talking about. Most unfortunately it is full-screen. Also, it is subtitled but not dubbed (not too upsetting to me, but it may be for some). The picture quality is not the greatest, although I haven't seen Ruscico's version so I can't compare.

I haven't watched it yet (other than the first few minutes to see this), but should I purchase the 5-disc version? Although it's out-of-print, a local company has some in their warehouse, but it's 60 USD, which is a little much for a poor college student right now. :(

I just saw a version at NYC's Film Forum - timed at 6 hours 51 minutes (shown with 2 15 minute intermissions over two screenings) -- with yellow subtitles. Is this the same version you have? The promotion claims this is the first time this has been seen in the U.S. like this, but is sounds like what you have.

Here's all the promo on the web site, which mostly just quotes Roger Ebert:

So I'm trying to figure out if this a restoration of the full, Russian version, just with subtitles.

If you were wanting the Hurricane one that was released recently in 2007, there is a very useful review on Amazon:

... but remember this one is "panned and scanned" . On the other hand the review did say that the new voice-over dubbing was much much better than the Ruscico version, but I understand the Ruscico is still the best to have.

You can find a Ruscico on: http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=31225&re=re

This one is excellent. Widescreen and original language with subtitles. Plus special features.
