homosexual demon?

please explain.

reply

He is decribed by Borg as a homosexual but the meaning of the demon is that Borg himself has unconcious homosexual tendencies and has a pasive behaviour chracteristic for the female side.

The young boy bathing represents the homosexual demon i.m.o.
The suggestive manner in which the boy stretches on the rock shows that he was trying to tempt/ seduce Johan.
Ultimately though, Johan chooses to reject his homosexual urges.

Sure about that? I thought the homosexual demon was the guy who puts make-up on Johan.

I think it was the guy who put the make-up on Johan too. But what was with the nude woman lying down? I forgot her importance, it's been sometime since I've seen the film. Did he like her, or was it a way of taunting him because he had homosexual tendencies?

reply

The nude woman was Veronica Vogler, whom he had had an affair with, and the demons used this as a way to tease him.

There are many allusions that would make me believe that indeed Johan Borg is struggling with his homosexuality. The killing of the young boy who is obviously trying to get his attention and seduce him on the rock. The "demon/ghost" making him dress up, the way he is always distant from his wife (she mentions that they rarely kiss). I doubt this is the main theme of the film, but an important one nonetheless.

A little too neat I'm afraid. This is not a 'psychological study of a fictional character named Johan'. The movie is a tool in which Bergman has personalized his own disgusts, horror and 'private demons' in the most fascinating way. The boy on the rocks he directed in every movement and expression to convey a repulsive quality (repulsive personally to Ingmar). Cheap Freudian analysis of Vargtimmen is a waste of time. Enjoy the imagination and delicious realization of Bergman's innermost horrors.

Johan stated more than once (I'm paraphrasing) that man and woman are made of one flesh. When Johan studies Veronica's body, maybe he sees her body as an ideal version of what his homosexual tendencies embody rather than an attempt to see Veronica as sexually attractive.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
