First Bergman?

I've never seen anything by him. Could I make this my first Bergman, or where should I start?

I would probably suggest Wild Strawberries or The Seventh Seal first. The Magician & Sawdust & Tinsel are also really good. I'd recommend seeing Hour of the Wolf or Persona after seeing a few of his films first. Thats just my opinion.

I think this would be the worst possible Bergman movie to start with. It's also by far my least favorite. ("Face to Face" is my second-least favorite.)

I would start with "Shame" or "Scenes from a Marriage." Or "The Seventh Seal."

"Shame" was my first Bergman, and I agree it's a good introduction. Not too conventional, not too weird, just right for Goldilocks when she's out exploring.

I've just started Bergman's filmography after finishing Tarkovsky's. So far I've watched The Seventh Seal, Persona, Wild Strawberries, The Virgin Spring, Winter Light, Shame, and Hour of the Wolf and Hour is my favorite by far. I found it deeply unsettling and reminiscent of David Lynch's Lost Highway (which is probably my favorite of his films).

So yes, I'd say this is a good start point. It's also more accessible, I think, to a general audience then some of his others.
