Spolier - if Georgie/Martin...

...is gay - and I think that's implied - why is he obsessed with a girl?

Now put that gun down Heidi! You’re not solving anything by massacring people!

reply

Could be both. I thought he was more narcissistic than gay. Or he could be gay but still fixated on a girl.

reply

WHAT??!!? Name ONE thing that he did that would establish that fact. Just one.

reply

He's not gay.

reply

Martin had body image issues. Nothing to do with being gay.

reply

I didn't notice anything at all that suggested he was gay.

You can't kill damnation, Mister. It don't die like a man dies.

reply

The close-up of his collection of body-building mags would have certainly been seen by contemporary audiences as a suggestion that he might be gay. Such magazines were often used as a surreptitious form of gay porn back when such stuff was outlawed and that would have been widely known at the time. That said, I think it's used more as red herring early on in the film when we're trying to figure out what exactly is 'wrong' with him.

reply

Noooo, not gay at all. He was a boy in a man's body, and he wanted to be seen as a handsome, viral man.... like his brother. Like, when he was drying himself off after swimming, and turned around so Susan could see him. He wanted her to think he was a strong, handsome man.

reply

At the lake I think we're expected to believe he is showing his sexual interest in Susan in the normal fashion, judged by her blush.🐭

Martin did not have a strong, handsome brother. He is masquerading as his brother Pete (albeit with a different name, Georgie) and the Pete that he refers to is Martin (himself) - just using the name Pete cause that's his brother (one less lie to have to remember). I think the editing tells us: he undresses in front of the mirror, pan to magazines (which he uses to satisfy himself), cut to Mom scene (which is when he satisfies himself off screen) and then cut to shot of Martin naked in front a cracked mirror. The crack covering his junk implies guilt over what he just did. That guilt causes this sexual obsession with a girl. Is it something that he can physically act on (ie: is he gay or straight) is never made clear (although the scene of him covering his junk and screaming 'you're like all the rest' after kissing Susan has its implications too). Initially, Susan doesn't know anyone named Martin - only Georgie and his brother Pete.
