Kind Of Violent For A Puppet Movie

Shootouts galore, bodies being dumped in the ocean, people being menaced with guns, guys falling from an airplane to their doom, and automatic cannon/machine guns on the Thunderbird ships that blow the abandoned airfield to bits -- and presumably the goons hiding there too: It's fun for the whole family!

It is called entertainment.

Don't get me wrong! I adore the Thunderbirds and love the movie, I just hadn't seen it for ages and was struck by how ghoulish some of the images are for an "entertainment" aimed at kids, or at least families. The one image that really struck me as being bizarrely morbid is when they tip the guy out of the airplane at the end -- like, wow.

Mild compared to Captain Scarlet. In that series the title character dies horribly at least once per episode.

I agree the bit on the Airplane was over the top. But I was impressed with the special effects. NO! CGI.

There is more Gravy about you then the Grave. Scrooge.

My grandkids told me: "Nonnie, it's not real, they're puppets."

It's apparent these things weren't targeted at kids, same for the Bugs Bunny cartoons. They were for the grown ups.

Muppets is the best example of when the subject matter was targeted strictly for kids, but adults were watching too, when they were on Sesame Street, so the Muppets, targeting more for adults or family affair, came into being.

The Stooges likewise, were supposed to be comedy shorts, we'll say the Dave Chappelle or Richard Pryor of their time, but as they became dated, they ended up on the Saturday morning circuit. By the time they were in cartoons with the real guys doing the opening bits, Moe was directly addressing the audience as 'youngsters'.

Now Richard Pryor nor Moms Mabley haven't ended up marketed to kids, but Pryor did do Pryor's Place on Saturday mornings (tho again, that hasn't been discovered by a younger audience either).

Again, I don't know how these puppet things were distributed when they first come out, but I do suspect it wasn't for a kids audience.

yeah i agree, although the pure camp of the movie made it almost hilarious how the bodies are dropped out the plane over the ocean....first one tiny puppet, then another, and another, and then, even after the plane goes off camera, another tiny puppet body goes off unexpectedly into the "ocean" below! i was howling! it was genius.....you never see anything that good in James Bond even

"kind of violent"

p.s. did you see Toy Story 3? my boyfriend and i were deeply disturbed by the amount of violence vs. actual entertainment contained in the last installment of what WAS a good movie....that movie had a different flavor to it----racism, sexism, kidnapping, murder, and torture.....all for kids? we were sickened,....this, on the other hand was artistic, comparitively

I think it was as close to a James Bond film starring marionettes, as we are going to get. All it needed was a John Barry theme and opening credits sequence.

And Gerry Anderson had originally intended to use actors but because of budget constraints was forced to use marionettes. Thank goodness !
