The ending, and the remake ending #### SPOILERS #####

I saw the original first and loved the film, and the ending. The remake is on cable endlessly. I just saw the original again on TCM and was reminded of how great the original ending is. When Faye D has the cops waiting for the dropoff, the random courier in Steve McQueen's Rolls Royce gets out with a telegraph to Faye.

Telegraph.... "I left early, bring the money, or keep the car. Love Tommy"

Wow I love that. If you don't have the cops with you, bring the money or keep the car as a consolation and have a nice life.

The remake is fun, stylish and clever at times. The ending, where she brings the cops, realizes what she's lost, tries to meet him and he is gone. Then of course, he is waiting on the plane behind her and all is happy.

This story was so strong with the consequences of the actions and the need for testing trust in that story. The new movie really annoyed me betraying the original ending to the happy one. I can see why many like the happy ending, and it's more mass appeal perhaps. After seeing the original more real ending in terms of cost of decisions, it makes me wish for more movies without always the happy, predictable ending. Just a few.

he knew what she was all about. She wanted to win the game & get him, than live happily ever after with him. the police would never have allowed it anyway.

So he got on the plane. the note was to remind her --she didn't get him and she would always know what she lost. She sure was stupid.

I need to watch the remake.

the remakse sucks ass. brosnan is fake and can't never capture the class!
it ruins everything.
they made happy ending for wider audience to accept it better!
*beep* the mass audience! it's people like us who can appreciate art that matters

I just watched the original and while it was great on its own and the ending was very interesting i don't think this bitter ending would have suited the remake the whole tone of the 90s version is a fun romaction(romance/action) flick so that ending would have been so off putting.

The remake was released at the same time as Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones and Sean Connery so i think it was the plan to change the tone to make it a good rival to Entrapment.

I loved the ending of the 1968 version - the look on her face at the end was priceless. Nowadays you can't sell an ambiguous ending to an audience (and to studio folks and producers) - what a shame!

You're right ... that '68 ending was "priceless" . . . and, yes, Miss Dunaway did a great job . . . superbly done movie!

The lack of bittersweetness was what made me not care as much for the remake. It's an okay movie in its own right and I can see why some prefer it to the original, but that sense of ambiguity makes the old ending far more haunting.
