Uncensored Version

Does anyone have the uncensored version of "Teorema"?

I had seen the original release in a revival house in the early 1980s and liked the movie so much that I ordered the DVD. Watching it, I was appalled to see that almost 10 minutes have been cut from the film, which originally ran 107 minutes (as opposed to 98 minutes on the DVD release).

However, I've heard that years ago the uncut version was put out on VHS. By any chance, does anyone have a copy of it?

Ed if you have any luck let me know... I am after that version as well.

reply

Will do, though I'm not hopeful.

There was a screening here in New York a few weeks ago as part of a Pasolini retrospective - and even at this prestigious screening, they showed a censored version of the film. (It appears there are two censored versions of "Teorema" as well as the original, uncensored one.)

I've complained to TLA, which distributes the DVD in the U.S., the Italian distributor and the Italian Culture Institute, which sponsored the retrospective. No response.

But I'll drop you as line if I ever hear from them or, better yet, manage to get a copy of the complete film. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's after it!

I'm curious...I rented this through Netflix and the film was listed as 98 minutes long so I obviously got the short end of the stick. Could you describe what the missing 10 minutes were about?

reply

Most of what's missing I don't remember. It's been over 20 years since I saw that original version. I do recall, however, at the end of the film, after the dad strips down at the railway station, there were shots of him wandering through the marketplace (with what I assumed were real crowds, not extras, looking on). The rest of the missing footage I don't recall offhand.

If you ever come across the original version, would you let me know?

I'll keep my eyes peeled although I should warn you I'm currently saving my paychecks to purchase Salo. Talk about elusive!

Wait on "Salo." Criterion is rereleasing it.

By the way, I think that the current DVD version is the uncensored version because every other DVD, including one by BFI, has had the same running time. I don't necessarily trust IMDb's listed times as the definitive running time.

i have a 94 min version. it doesn't have the shot you mentioned

Also, I remember reading old articles about this film and I'm positive there was originally a kissing scene between Stamp and the son or the father? I also own the 98 minute DVD version.

Amazon.ca has a DVD version with a 105 minute runtime.

Arte (France/ Germany) is broadcasting 'Théorème' tonight with a 92 minute running time, which converted to NTSC equates to about 96 minutes.

I'm surprised if Arte is showing a censored version but judging by the previous comments on here about 98 minute and 105 minute versions then I guess Arte's version must have some cuts in it too. I guess the 105 minute version referred to by Andreric is NTSC, which would convert to almost 101 minutes in PAL version. That sounds like the nearest thing to an uncut version to me.

Anyone quoting running times should include details of whether they have an NTSC (American) version or a PAL (European) version, as it is hard to accurately compare these things unless we know that.
