What a Moment!

When Karloff turns with such purpose towards Bobby and marches forward, WOW. That look on his face, the cane, the walk. I mean WOW. That is a Movie Star.

Yes, Karloff's charisma and personality, expressed through his character, are enormous and tangible. What a talent, and when you realize how poor his health was when he made this film, what a trouper!

reply

I loved it when Karloff bitch slapped that little punk.

reply

Was a ok scene. But for such a sharpshooter he couldn't shoot boris almost pointblank. Also who walks up on a gun man and just bitch slaps him? I know, it's just a movie.

reply

The shooter was pretty inept he kept dropping things through the whole movie.

Karloff's character at that point was just so fed up he didn't care if he got shot he was just mad as hell. I thought it was pretty accurate the shooter was a big coward anyway and would have acted like that.

At that point, the shooter was breaking down. You can see this because he was shooting at Boris on the drive in screen and also at Boris the person. He was confusing what was on screen with reality. His break down would no doubt have affected his aim.

Having said that, he actually DID hit Boris. Although it was a glancing shot that only grazed the side of his forehead.

It's the difference between shooting "targets" who are unaware of your presence versus shooting at somebody who knows you're there and is coming for you. There's both the dehumanizing aspect of the distance-plus-unawareness thing, plus pure cowardice and panic. Ask any soldier what it's like the first time you're shooting at somebody who knows you're there and might shoot back at you.

reply

I know this is jackassish, but any old man with a cane could have done that look. That it was Karloff is a bonus, I admit.

Got this DVD just a few days ago. Saw clips of it on The Heroes of Horror collection of A&E biographies and thought it would be a good movie. Even though it was supposed to be a serious movie, it had a few laughs. Here are some spoilers:

Byron and Sammy get drunk together-Orlok-Hey, hey, hey, that's *my* bed! Sammy screams when he looks over and sees Orlok, Orlok looks into the mirror and scares himself!

Byron slaps Bobby-Boris was a spunky old guy, wasn't he, in spite of his health at the time.

The audio commentary and intro was great, too.
