Notice Horus when he gets changed...

Does anyone remember the scene where Horus is getting changed into his new robe and the little children rush in? There was a brief moment of animated nudity, there.

How can everyone else complain about e.g. Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbour Totoro when this film obviously goes slightly less "innocent" than that?

Is it because this is a hallmark film for anime and it somehow is regarded as immune to negative critism?

I don't want to be a "troll" or a "totoro" (hehe) - this film was quite good (I shed a tear in the grandfather scene at the beginning), but how can people ignore this?

I mean, the Amazon.co.uk Region 2 DVD is classified as U Universal. I really don't get it!

Probably they've overlooked it. Or maybe (but I really doubt that) they've finally recognized that not all nudity is sexually offensive.

I don't know where you live but at least in Finland non-sexual nudity has no effect on rating of a film. I guess it's the same in some other countries too.

The movie was rated "U" (universal: suitable for all) in Britain. The nudity is non-sexual child nudity, animated and very brief. Superman is also rated "U" in Britain and contains male child nudity but you don't find anyone complaining about that on that movies message boards do you? What is the problem people have with these japanese movies?

"Americans do not understand the Japanese view of this subject."

True, but most European countries (including the UK) share the same view as Japan. Animated non-sexual nudity doesn't effect the rating (e.g. 'The Snowman').

To reiterate what others have said, he's a child and it's non-sexual nudity, it's also very brief and it is animated so there's no potential worry about any actual children having been forced to be shown naked when they didn't want to, I don't know whether you could get away with an adult man's penis being shown in a U rated film even if there was nothing sexual about it (I wouldn't object but I don't know if the ratings board would agree) but I have no idea what your issue is with that scene, in fact I've never seen any sexualised nudity or ditto panty shots, etc. in any Ghibli movie or any other film made by Miyazaki or Takahata. I'm aware that some anime and manga are full of objectifying underage T & A and other squicky (or intensely disturbing) stuff like that, but not all anime and manga is like that. Not all nudity is sexual, and not all portrayals of the sexuality of characters below the age of 18 are saying that paedophilia or otherwise taking sexual advantage of someone significantly younger than you is acceptable.

I can't think of any U rated movie but Amadeus is rated PG ("some scenes may not be suitable for younger children") in the UK and features a few seconds of full frontal adult male nudity during the opening sequence. In it's director's cut version (also rated PG in the UK) there is a scene featuring the female lead topless for about 30 seconds screen time. I guess it's all to do with context.

I own the movie and had to watch it again because the scene was so brief that I didn't even notice the nudity. Maybe you shouldn't watch anime PERIOD if something this brief disturbs you. There are things that are much worse out there that have been animated...

Because
A) it is not sexualized
B) you barely notice it, it last like two seconds
