Brian Jones

Brian Jones is sure looking rough in the studio footage, I remember reading how Keith had to step it up for the Beggars Banquet sessions because Brian was so out of it, and it shows.

His guitar wasn't even audible in the studio mix. He sat in the corner noodling on the guitar over the entire track. No wonder he was shown the door soon afterward.

I've just been reading Keith Richard's book "Life." I think he and Mick were really horrible to Brian Jones. For some reason Keith says they couldn't just fire him. I guess bullying him and taking his girlfriend was the better option.

Jones wasn't perfect, he had some very bad qualities like beating up women, but they should have just cut him off instead of the slow torture they put him through.

Sorry, I know it doesn't have much to do with the topic but I had to vent. Thanks.

I've just watched this again on Sky Arts and I remember years ago watching it and there was some scenes of Brian Jones really out of his head.

But the version on Sky Arts never showed this.

Any reason why?

See the review on this website (main page as I'm typing this): the ABKCO cut & re-release of Godard's original film.., 20 January 2003

reply

Yeah I thought it must have been cut,it is a scary sight.

where is this version?? I have the version on DVD and whilst Jones looks awful he doesnt say anything or look as bad as you make out!!

Also people (AMERICANSS!) need to stop judging Brian on this film. He really was more than this, he created the band and was intsrumental untill Jagger And Keith pushed him away, he died tragically and deserves more respect.

reply

I remember seeing it years ago.

Also I've got a video of the Stones called 25x5,it's the story of them upto 1989,and there's a couple of clips of Jones on the One plus One really out of it.

And I agree Jones was a brilliant musician, but he was out of it by 1968.

reply

I'm confused...when you say "the original Godard film re-released" does that mean with all Rolling Stones footage in or out? Godard was angry about the insertion of Rolling Stones studio work. So does that mean the original has them re-inserted or taken out? Just say the Stones footage is (is not) in the re-release, please.

reply

The Stones footage is in the re-release. But there is not the scene of Brian looking out of it, that's been cut.

Yeazer, you need to stop judging Americans(s)! I'm American and I've never judged Brian Jones in my life...

reply

What was this scene of him being out of it like?? Did he speak??

The version I have on DVD literally shows him for like 30 seconds playing the guitar (attempting too) and it only shows the back of him... theres a little bit of him and keith sharing a ciggarette but hardly anything else.

reply

It didn't show him speaking.

Get this video on ebay:

You'll see in the Sympathy For The Devil clips.

It is just 2 quick clips though.

Brian Jones was a huge part of the Stones early success don't judge him just by what is in Keith's book. Read Bill Wymans' book "Stone Alone" for a more balanced view. That said by the time of this film he really was a mess most of the time. Mick and Keith (especially) pushed him out in a power grab.Problem was he couldn't write a song to save his life (literally). However at his best Brian was an excellent musician and key element in their sound..

some examples

Little Red Rooster, King Bee, Can't be Satisfied- slide guitar
Not Fade Away- harmonica
Last Time- lead guitar riff
Mona- lead guitar riff
Paint it Black-sitar
Under My Thumb- marimba
Ruby Tuesday- recorder
