Who else could've played Ned?

If they ever remade this movie, who else can you see as Ned? Maybe Michael Douglas could've played Ned. Not as good as Burt, but Michael could've pulled it off.

In a way he's already done it, with "Up in the Air", a character study and allegory about a seemingly popular and successful man who gets increasingly desperate as he senses how hollow his life is and how lonely he's become.
