What happened to ‘The Swimmer’ 2004 re-make with Alec Baldwin?

Does anyone have further information about what happened to the proposed re-make of the ‘The Swimmer’ in 2004? There was some news about three years ago that the 1968 motion picture with Burt Lancaster would be re-made by production company ContentFilm staring Alec Baldwin. Any further news about what happened to this motion picture project?

Although Alec is the talented Baldwin, this idea sounds SO ridiculous! Leave this classic alone.

reply

The remake was scrapped!

Still would love to see a modern day version made.

I think AB showed up in a swimsuit and they decided he was no Burt Lancaster!

I always thought Ross from friends would be better for the role 'The Schwimmer'?

Good one!

Even though I'm anti-remake, particularly of this excellent film, is there any actor today more "suited" to play Ned Merrill than Alec Baldwin?

reply

I read somewhere The Swimmer remake 2008, not 2003 is back in production stages? El Dorado Pics and Alec Baldwin are working on the project.

reply

I would like to see it remade. Remake of Cape Fear by Marty was great. Just depends on who does it. I'd say 95 percent of remakes stink but some are good. Scarface. The Thing. Alec Baldwin could get in shape for it. Just not sure if there are any Frank Perrys left to direct. Who could direct? . . .

reply

If you think that 95 per cent of remakes are rubbish (which is true) then surely we should take that as a sign that the whole concept should be outlawed?(though I know there's no way of implemeting such a law - but just think! A world without Jan de Bont's version of The Haunting and Sly Stallone's version of Get Carter!)

reply

MMMmmm. I forgot about The Haunting and Get Carter. Outlaw all remakes. Gone in 60 seconds stunk up the place too.

would johnny depp be better in the lead role than alec baldwin?

Although Johnny Depp has the necessary intensity (more than Baldwin, even Lancaster), he is just too young looking and not "physical" enough for the role.

There are 100 more appropriate roles waiting for Depp in the next 10 years. After that, we'll see ... if he's still in good shape.

reply

The best actor for this role is Pierce Brosnan. Why? Because he's physically fit for the role, and old enough (the same age as Lancaster.)

reply

If anything the remake list is getting longer. I didn't even know "Clash of the Titans" was being remade until today. Yesterday I saw the trailer to the remake of "The Last House on the Left".

reply

The remake of "Last House on the Left" was great! This is why remakes are not that bad of an idea. I mean so many movies are not technically remakes . . . but they are remakes. Heck, "The Fighter" was a remake of "Rocky" was a remake of every blasted movie about the boxing profession since the 1930s. I like the idea of Pieirce Bronson as Nedddy. This may sound strange but I think Rob Lowe could pull it off too. (please no flaming). I happen to respect Rob Lowe.

Brilliant choice

I'm so glad the remake got scrapped. This truly is a classic and is perfect how it is. A remake could only ever be detractory.
Also, the nature of the story and events within are timeless enough to not warrant any updating - online dating is already mentioned, so what else is new? :)

hopefully it has died.

Absolutely hate the idea of remakes, but if they HAD to, get Sean Penn to direct, and Ed Harris to star.

reply

Mel Gibson is made for the role. They have to get him. If he's not available they should get Michael Douglas to play Ned.

reply

It would be perfect for Michael Douglas. No way you could update it. You couldn't wander into backyard pools anymore, what with hi-tech security, walls and dogs. Ned would be picked up by Homeland Security in 2 seconds flat.

reply

Baldwin hit his weight gain period, necessitating a name change from "The Swimmer" to "The Sinker". The producers thought it would be mistaken for a new Titanic film and thus scrapped the whole project.

Thankfully the 1968 gem is still available.

reply

...and that was enough for Alec Baldwin. Movie canceled.

"Ready when you are, Mister DeMille."
