Did any of this really happen?

I read on wikipedia that the X-1 submarine was scrapped by the British in 1936. I wonder how much of this is fiction.

James Caan's performance was really flat in this BTW.

The British HMS X-1 was not a midget sub, but rather "the largest submarine in the world", according to Wikipedia.
There was a U.S. midget sub X-1, from 1955-73.

It wasn't just flat. Every scene made me think he was severely depressed! Talk about an uninspiring leader! And the really bad occasional attempt at a bogus British accent! Wow this movie is lame!

Come see a fat old man sometime!

This story was based on attempts to attack the German warships Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and Lützow, carried out by mini-subs.

Man, this movie was filmed in Scotland and the UK - those dripping wet outdoor scenes must have been brutal cold for the cast.
