Comedy?

Good evening :)

I have seen this film last tuesday.
It was really very good and so I came to this site to look for some information about it.
It surprised me, that a man /I don t know who is it/, who has commented it, wrote, that it is a commedy.
Film "Spalovac mrtvol" is not a comedy at all, though there are some scenes that make you smile /2 or 3/.

That s my opinion about this film. :)

I totally agree. I laughed at many moments of the movie ("Věneček nebo rakvičku?")

reply

Its very black humour...
It is just about as black as it can get, but funny it certainly is not.

Then you lack a good sense of humor!

Yeah, horror that gets right under your skin and into your heart and soul. A devastating film that gets increasingly more uncomfortable to watch as it progresses.

Yes - the perfect way to describe the film. It's also very dreamlike, atmospheric, and beautifully filmed! I'm not sure where people are finding "comedy" in this film - even with my dark sense of humor, I didn't detect anything comical or satirical about it, but still found it morbidly fascinating. Perhaps the novel is different ...

I agree, I have reported the fact that I do not consider it a comedy at all and neither does anyone around me. A great film indeed, but definitely not a comedy..

A nenĂ to ani cerna komedie, sorry.. ;-)

reply

Hmm, not really a comedy in my book either - i think it was the preparation for Holocaustal genocide that swayed me.

reply

It was nearly as funny as 'Dude Where's My Car' only just funnier than 'Beethoven's Second'.

reply

If it is comedy, that it's such dark humour that I would really be afraid of it...

reply

I disagree its not dark but terribly funny. The whole premise of a moral man is what is being examined and ridiculed. As such though it deals with the holocaust and the destruction of a nation state, as a film it is funny. Sure its very very uncomfortable but thats not what Herz is filming, he is filming a so called moral man "kulturni clovek" and showing how irrelevant such things are...

Also from a perspective of cinema as an art form it is amazing.

PS I fail to see how its sex scenes were considered shocking? please clarify

reply

I don't say it's not an amazing film. From what I've seen I would call it the best Czech film (though I haven't seen a lot of masterpieces, so it's not too serious.)
But it's dark humour, too dark for me.

It's good to see that someone agrees with me, although dark and funny are not exclusive terms.

We are lucky that some filmakers are able to make films with very black humour. When films are made in a brief ray of sunlight in an otherwise repressive environment (ie Czechovakia in the late 60's) What can you expect.

I reconmend this film for anyone that apreciates artistic expression.

Exactly! This is not a laugh-a-minute-cluthing-sides comedy, it's mockingly, even bitingly, ironic; a form of comedy often employed by the best satirists. The central character is a ridiculous sham and what makes him ironic and comic is his inflated and distorted sense of self and mission. The throne at Lhasa awaits indeed!

Absolutely brilliant film!

no way this should be considered as comedy. It is a very nice example of horror / film-noir. I personally found the "funny" acts by. V.Mensik quite irritating and disturbing the plot..

U R funny.

It is a masterpiece, but I agree, certainly not a comedy. You could always argue that there is a level of darkly absurdist satire, but overall, the tone of the film is surreal, nightmarish and punctuated by moments of abstract horror.

reply

Years after I responded here... I agree that "absurdist satire" is the best term to describe it. I've read the book as well, maybe others here have not? The book does have a trace of absurd humor in it, especially in the begining, but if the film ever does, than in much lesser extent, and with much more emphasis on the horror (based mostly on the personality of the character).
