Yeah, it opens with a topless shot of a liberated women named Eva, wife of Jan. Jan is a lowly violin player fool who just kind of boringly exists. But he's not unhappy. Then all that stuff goes down involving the way. Jan stops his passive agressive way and they don rags and hoods like out of the dark ages as he basically oppresses her and uses his own masculine force to control her. It's a story of womens and mens role in a marriage. Jan just loses it once the Violin is smashed takes control.

I thought this movie was about War and its direct and indirect effects on people like Jan, Eva, Jacobi, The young soldier and everyone else.

Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.

I think this is a part of the movie, but to say this movie is simply about Jan is the epitome of tunnel vision.

I agree with the OP. In a kind of way, Jan becomes what Eva "wanted" at the beginning of the film, like in that part where he starts to cry and she tells him to stop it and face his fears (i don't remember the exact line).
Later, she becomes very emotional, mostly like him before the war starts.
When his violin is broken, his artistical and highly emotional persona gives way to a very angry and cold man, the "masculine" men rather than the sensitive artist.

Interesting points about Jan's development. I think I agree. Eva obviously is ambivalent about Jan, at best. But is she better off with him as he changes? Heh. Perhaps not.
