war in the subconscious

This is one of my favourite films. It is especially because of Eva's words, the way she sees war, it is all hidden in her dreams. Very powerful film about war's affect on innocent by-standers.

I just saw this for the 1st time. I have just got his films
from the "grim" 1965-70 period, Persona, Passion, Hour of the Wolf
and Shame, a grim and realistic picture of war.
It makes one want to scream about the insanity of our world.

Anyway, these are great films, I recommend seeing
them on DVD as after watching you can see it again
with commentary by a prof. I like to listen too.

His "grim" period? Please, tell me which Bergman film is not grim.

reportedly Smiles of a Summer Night is a "comedy". otherwise, "bergman" and "humour" go together like peaches and sh-t...

@K_lingon:

Smultronstället, for one. Definitely ends on a positive note. One of his most positive work overall, hands down.

Well said! I agree , I love this film. It has displayed the human nature during the war fragily, makes a variation.

I just saw Life and Nothing But, the French film about the insane slaughter
during WW1 (350,000 French dead were unidentified).

One would think society would set up some way to punish the criminals
that carry out these slaughters. I don't believe that this is just human
nature and we have to live with it. With enough will, surely this ultimate
evil could be overcome. Maybe only women should be allowed to rule,
with the provision that anyone that the UN says starts anything gets
immediately stopped, boycotted, etc.

Only the UN should be allowed soldiers and weapons.

What a great world we could have if it wasn't run by idiots.

perhaps should be called the more grim period in that there seems no hope at all here unlike the earlier & later films that do have some hope or redemption.

I think it's fair to say that this film is way darker than films like Cries and Whispers or Scenes from a Marriage, or even The Seventh Seal.

Replying to a message 8 years old seems a little futile, but couldn't resist pointing out that the theory of 'women ruling equals less war' is completely nullified by the likes of Maggy Thatcher who started the falklands war and Winnie Mandela who encouraged necklacing (burning people alive using tyres and petrol).
