I just wanted to make a post on this page since there aren't too many and i've begun to become acquainted with the Bergman masterpieces (i.e. Persona, Fanny & Alexander, Shame).
The scene that stands out most for me in this film was the last scene with Eva and Jan together in the boat with the others. This is such a mesmerizing scene with unbelievable and memorable performance by Liv Ullman and stunning cinematography S. Nykvist.
This is one of the better Bergman's I have seen, it is a shame that more people have not seen it. I am really disappointed by the lack of comments on this board.
Have you seen A Passion (sometimes known as The Passion of Anna)? Amazingly enough the dream sequence is the continuation of this scene, as the boat comes ashore.
I wouldn't disagree with the three films you name being described as masterpieces, but I'd be interested to know what other films people rate as his best.
Nattvardsgästerna (Winter light) is for me far out the best movie of Bergman, together with Smultronstället. It is very strange but i am a little dissapointed by his later movies. Is it because of the colour that i am not used to? Is it because he uses other actors that i don't like?
I liked the beginners Sommarnattens Leende, Det Sjunde Inseglet, Smultronstället, Ansiktet, Såsom i en spegel, Nattvardsgästerna and Tystnad. And i also saw Viskningar och Rop, Riten and Scener ur ett äktenskap (those 10 movies i have them all on DVD) but i don't like them as much as the others and this evening they show Skammen in a local cinema. I am very curious. Because i have much hope in Persona, vargtimmen and Skammen that they won't dissapoint me.
I think it's the best work either von Sydow or Ullman has done, and that's surely saying something. Here's a link to my favorite Max von Sydow performances...
I agree that this is the best I have seen Liv Ullmann yet. Since she herself singled out her performance in this and in "The Emigrants" and "The New Land" as being her personal favorites, I will be seeing the other two as soon as I can.
It's just incredible and horrific. The dead bodies floating in the water and the boat stuck there in limbo, unable to escape the death all around them is powerful. I think it could be considered a metaphor for Eva and Jan being unable to escape the war all around them and their own marital problems: the boat itself could be considered their marriage. They need to remain there on that boat to live, but they are also trapped by it.
