Walter Winchell's introduction

I found Walter Winchell's introduction to this film interesting but unnecessary. Did "Single Room Furnished" play in theaters like that, or was the Winchell portion tacked on later?

reply

I don't know for a fact, but given that the movie wasn't released until after her death, the theatrical version probably included the intro.

reply

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that as well. I can't imagine in what venue the introduction would have been used otherwise.

reply

It was used in the original theatrical release. I'm sure the reason it's there was to get Winchell to talk quite a bit about the movie in his columns, an old Hollywood ploy long used in the past (ie: Louella Parsons, Hedda Hopper cameos in films) and even in the late 1960's (producer Ross Hunter had columnist Jill Jackson in bit parts in several of his films).

reply

I suspect you're right on the mark, Harlow. The inclusion of Walter Winchell was probably a ploy for publicity that didn't pay off. I think the introduction feels a bit "off," but what follows is most rewarding regardless.

reply

Totally unnecessary - and hardly 'on track' - JM's performances were hardly noteworthy - could well have been a high school play production.
