what's up with 1966 for the release date?

This film always gets mentioned (on here as well) as being released after Jayne's death (in 1967), yet the release date claims it's 1966.

So I'm going to assume it was judged to be pretty bad and the last hurrah from a fading star (or whimper, depending upon how you look at it) and was released briefly in '66, then shelved...but then to capitalize on Jayne's death, it got a larger distribution after she died, which is when most everybody say it?
