DVD Release

Is there any hope that the powers that be will seize the moment and get this movie out on DVD, given the goings-on in Rome right now?

reply

Unfortunately, some very good films are ONLY available on VHS. So if you want the film badly enough, that's what you have to settle for.

Interesting. All week I've been bugged by the memory of a film about the process of how the pope is elected. I remember this movie vaguely because I saw it with my parents in Bangkok, Thailand when it was release. Raised a Caltholic, the movie stuck in my mind. And now, during the past week, it has surfaced again. Do you know if the film is on VHS? I'd like to have my partner view it...

The means of electing the pope has changed a bit since the elections of '78 -- you can no longer have a pope elected by acclamation as in the movie -- but this movie is definitely worth a look as far as the look and feel of what goes on in the conclave.

The movie IS on VHS -- two tapes, in fact -- but it appears to be out of print. Notably, though, I see that it's going to be on Turner Classic Movies on 4/21/05, so you can always tape it. What will be interesting to see is whether the movie is aired before or after a pope is elected, given that conclave gets started on the 18th.

I have seen the VHS version available on Amazon and also in Ebay.
Also, there are some Asian sourced VCD's on Ebay.

You have probably heard by now from someone else but yes, Shoes of the Fisherman is available on VHS tape. What kind of dummies run the DVD business I don't know but they missed a great chance to get this beautiful film out for the next Conclave. Amazon stocks the VHS version I think.

I just bought the 2000 release on eBay, and the bidding was quite competetive. I ended up spending $62 (US) on it, but I've seen some copies sell for as much as $95. There are usually one or two copies floating around on eBay, but you have to be prepared to pay big bucks for them.

This wonderful film is being released this November. I can't wait, this is one of my favorite Anthony Quinn performances - thank heavens (literally) this is finally getting it's due on DVD!
