Hi, I need help understanding why Vittorio De Sica, who played Cardinal Rinaldi disappeared so early in the movie Shoes of the Fisherman? Thanks in advance for any and all help....Tree 547

In the book there was a point where the cardinal wanted to retire. After that he would be a factor in the story no longer.

Also, when a new Pope is elected, many positions in the Vatican -and the Church itself- are changed.

After Kiril is elected, it would have been an optimal time for Rinaldi to retire, if he so chose. Or, he might have been dispatched to a new assignment by the new Pope.

Yeah, but wasn't that within a really short timespan? It happened between the election and the coronation, which presumably would have been within a week.

Even then, at least for the meantime, all top Vatican officials are restored to their posts, even if just on an interim basis. The change in staff happens much more gradually.
