Text pls.

Can someone point me to where I can find the text of the blessings Lakota gives a newly elected pope from teh balcony and to the text of the prayer he says in hebrew for the dying Jew?
Maybe there is a transcript of this movie?

I don't know about the Jewish blessing, but the blessing from the balcony is called the Urbi et Orbi (To the City and to the World). It's pretty standard. You can find it on Wikipedia and probably the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Popes give it right after they're elected, then on every Christmas and Easter. You've probably seen footage from the last time John Paul II appeared in public, and also the first time Pope Benedict XVI appeared on the balcony as pope. They happened, like, a month or so apart, but they were both to give that blessing (I just realised the coincidence).

I am pretty sure that the Jewish prayer is the "Shema Yisrael".

reply

It is. But what's interesting about the Shema as appears in the film is that Pope Kiril uses the word Hashem (and not Adonai, as what one would expect in a Hebrew prayer). The reason for this is, traditionally, Adonai is only spoken when speaking an actual prayer. Hashem is used to refer to G-d in a secular sense, or when reciting a prayer in a non-holy context ... like, say, in a movie.
