the international crisis in the Book verson possible spoliet inside


I know that in the movie verson the P R of China had mssing troop along it's border with the USSR, and because of imenit massive starvation the Chinese were going to invade and take Southeast Asia by force and at the same time take Hong Kong by force

but in the book verson what was the point of the crisis that threaten the world

To create a sense of urgency and immediacy, would be my guess, in addition to appeal to a vast populous that had lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis not long before.

General nuclear tensions, and racial trouble, the book was written during the missle crisis and the civil rights/anti conloist movement

I read the book years ago. If I remember correctly the WWIII Chinese invasion plot line isn't in the book at all, it was written for the movie. I remember liking the book (with the upcoming conclave I think I'll read it again), but the movie is more dramatic.
