Could a 'SOTFM' remake be done today?

Of course the Cold War situation as we knew it in 1968 no longer exists (although it does in a somewhat different form), the Catholic Church as an institution is quite different, and the idea of having a non-Italian pope would no longer be a big deal in and of itself, but I think it would be possible to do a new version with perhaps several key changes:

1) "Kiril" would have to have been held in prison in a fundamentalist Islamist theocracy;

2) The hunger crisis would have to be an African nation becoming territorially aggressive to gain land for food production

3) As much as the hunger crisis and the threat of war, the crisis facing "Kiril" would have to be taking dramatic, even draconian, steps to put an end to the pedophilia crisis inside the church.

To a considerable degree, it already got remade in real life.

Hollywood doesn't have the guts to have Kiril held in prison by a fundamentalist Islamist theocracy, they'd do some fiction about him being imprisoned in a fundamentalist Evangelical Christian theocracy set in the near future.

Check out The Young Pope on HBO. Not the same world issues, but speculation on what a younger pope might do in what might be our time.
