R rating for 1968

I guess this gets an "R" rating for mature theme and violence....but by 1975 standards it would have been "PG". Not a whole lot of swearing, no F bombs,no nudity, the violence would get a PG rating in my book, certainly not "R".

I suppose in '68 the theme of homosexuality was a pretty mature topic, but this movie doesn't deserve an "R" rating and should have been changed to "PG" in the 70's.....this isn't even PG-13....just PG.

Any film with main gay characters was automatically given an R rating well into the 1970s. "La Cage Aux Folles" a French comedy about a gay couple was given a R rating in 1978 and ahd no nudity, no sex, no violence and maybe one profanity. "Najinsky"--a 1980 film about a gay Russian ballet dancer--got an R rating solely because of a few quick kisses beytween two men. The entire rest of the film was all PG material. So the R rating for this in 1968 is not too hard to belive. However if it were rerated I think it would get a PG easily.

I just watched this on You Tube. PG all the way.

This movie is kind of tense and it has suicide, forced kissing, heavy drinking, so actually, mature theme and violence are accurate attributes. A PG rate would be too light.

The suicide was off camera, the forced kiss was short (and can be seen on daytime TV now), heavy drinking (ditto) and how is this too violent for a PG? PG-13 MAYBE but not an R.

PG-13 would be alright, yes. If children want to watch it, okay, but for me this movie is not for children at all, because it is mainly about repressed desire and (severe) obsession. I don't think it's appropriate and they wouldn't get it anyway. And yes, almost nothing is shown, but there's the tension and rage between the characters. Maybe a child would only understand that one man was in love with the other on the kissing scene, otherwise, this wouldn't make much sense for them. They wouldn't know about the character's struggle and other stuff that it's going on. A PG movie may have tension and violence, but the theme is probably still light (friendship, kindness), I think this movie deals with mature themes.

I can't see any kid wanting to see this. It's not that it's too shocking for them at all. They'd just be bored silly! The slow pace would probably drive them crazy and they'd stop watching. I also don't think they'd understand the themes or feelings at all. But I agree--PG-13 is probably the best rating.
