Actually, I just purchased "The Savage Intruder" from amazon.com!
I put "Miriam Hopkins" in the search browser and the films of hers that are available came up-and there it was.
THERE MAY BE ANOTHER ONE LEFT ON AMAZON!
I recall there being two available as I picked the one that was slightly more expensive as the item location was closer to me, and on amazon that is a major consideration when choosing a seller.
This seller was great-sent me the tape (around $48) AND made a dvd for free-although he asked me not to mention that part in the feedback.

I'd like to see this movie, though it seems not as much as you do (i.e. I'm curious, but not $48 curious). Still, I'm glad to hear you got hold of a copy. Maybe when you've watched it you'll come back and tell us what you thought.
