I didn't like seeing Lee Van Cleef so inept in this film. He had the Mexican captured 3 different times, and 3 different escapes. Yes, the Mexcian was really innocent, but Lee didn't know that. He was treating him like a criminal and failed to hold onto him. Makes him a weak lawman compared to his other films.

I agree he wasn't inept, but I also think at times I think he was deliberately seen to be outsmarted by Cuchillo, perhaps as you infer, to demonstrate that Mexicans can be as smart, if not smarter than Yanks. Perhaps to also suggest that he might not possess the native cunning that could be construed as being a pre - requisite for Senate candicacy.
