Actually there was a soundtrack (on vinyl-Sidewalk ST-5913) released at the time of the film's release. Here's what's on it--

The Pretty Song from Psych-Out by The Story Book
Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow by The Strawberry Alarm Clock
Two Fingers Pointing On You by The Seeds
Ashbury Wednesday by Boenzee Cryque
The World's On Fire by The Strawberry Alarm Clock
Psych-Out Sanctorum by The Story Book
Beads of Innocence by The Story Book
The Love Children by The Story Book
Psych-Out by The Story Book
The World's On Fire (Long Version) by The Strawberry Alarm Clock

I believe The Pretty Song from Psych-Out was also released as a single.

"We can't stop here. This is bat country!"

actually, even though it was about the dumbest movie ever made, the music in Psych-Out was cool. The legendary MC5 even had a song originally meant for the flick but was instead used for the really weird film 'Gold' starring Del Close............Jack Nicholson as a hippie musician??????????

reply

I don't remember Nicholson even TOUCHING the strings.

reply

Pretty Song from Psych-Out was released on a single circa March 1968, as the b-side of Sit With the Guru.

reply

Thanks for the track listing, maxwell. Didn't really care much for the movie(outside of Nicholson and Susan Strasberg) but the soundtrack was quite good.

YOU CAN GO TO EBAY AND TYPE IN "PSYCH OUT" AND UP WILL COME ALL SORTS OF STUFF RELATED TO THE FILM.

MANY TIMES THE ORIGINAL 33 1/3 LP IS ON EBAY FOR BID.

I HAVE 3 COPIES OF THIS ALBUM I ALSO HAVE THE MOVIE ON VHS AND ON DVD

THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCKS CD "STRAWBERRIES MEAN LOVE" HAS ALOT OF THE MUSIC FROM THE FILM~~ THIS IS THE CLOSEST YOU WILL GET TO OWNING SOME OF THE MUSIC ON CD FROM THAT FILM... OTHER THAN THAT BID ON THE ALBUM!!!

Thanks!

For those of you alarm clock fans you might want to also check out "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." It's finally out on dvd (the band makes an appearance in a party scene), and the soundtrack (an English import) has a couple of clock songs. I think the movie's great!

Who performed that instrumental "Purple Haze" ripoff? That sure didn't sound like either The Seeds or Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Fish, plankton, sea greens... protein from the sea!

reply

I dunno, but boy, did you hit the nail on the head. As we watched the movie, my friend laughed out loud, saying "HURPLE PAZE!!"

reply

Hehe, yeah.

But I have to say that this song only sounds like purple haze in the verse, the chorus has more of a "foxy lady" feel.

The funny thing is that Purple Haze was only recorded in 1967, the year before this movie was released.

reply

It's amazing they got away with that, because it's such a blatant Hendrix rip-off. Of course, the '60s were not as litigious an era as ours is.

reply

That purple haze ripoff is oddly enough also used in the trailer for Black Caesar (1973)

reply

That's odd. Melodies like that must be the musical equivalent of clip art -- available for generic use at rock-bottom prices. I've seen "Black Caesar," but not the trailer.

reply

That is "Ashbury Wednesday" by The Boenzee Cryque, or just Boenzee Cryque, I've seen it both ways. I have a hazy memory that the band was from Colorado. I originally thought it was just a group of studio players, but apparently they were a real band. I believe they had a single on the same label as The Rainy Daze, another band from Colorado. I think I got this information from the back of a garage rock compilation LP, it may have been one of the ones put out by Greg Shaw on Archive International Productions. That's all I got right now.

And I don't know what "Boenzee Cryque" means, sounds like some psychedelic gibberish concocted while the band was high.

You can try to find the soundtrack or some Strawberry Alarm Clock records too. Same music.

Just can read intelligent answers

What's the name of the instrumental that opens chapter 9 on the DVD?

Strawberry Alarm Clock music is hard to find on CD. The original Incense and Peppermints album is not available, but a compilation of that title is. You can get the original album as a Japanese import, but the price is outrageous, as is Good Morning Sunshine with the two added cuts from The Best of album. Collector's Choice released Wake Up... It's Tomorrow, The World in a Seashell, and good Morning Starshine (without bonus tracks) but they're out of print and may be down to existing stock, as a local Virgin Megastore never restocked The World in a Seashell fter I bought it, and the other store never restocked Good Morning Starshine after somebody else bought it or Wake Up when I bought it.

Sundazed records are now producing new vinyl for classic albums. The Incense And Peppermints album is available. Some record stores that carry new vinyl may have it, or check out sundazed.com.
