Dick Shawn - Robin Williams?

I wonder if Robin Williams took from his style - I saw a lot of similarities between Robin Williams and Dick Shawn. Am I the only one who thinks this?

reply

I thought the exact same thing when I watched this. For a moment I forgot the time period and thought it was Robin Williams.

I totally see the similarities too. I actually came to this board to see if there were any threads about it.

Dick really did the job so wonderfully... i nearly ran hysterical watching his audition song....

I think the same thing every time.

"I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

reply

I think he did. In fact, I have heard in the entertainment industry that Robin Williams copies a lot of things from other performers. This is not to question his talent or how much I've enjoyed him over the years - but original, no.

As a sidenote, he appeared in High Anxiety as the gay man at the airport who lures Richard Thorndike (Mel Brooks) into the bathroom by impersonating a cop.

reply

Yep. I kept thinking this is Robin Williams before Robin Williams!

Gotham, take control of your city.

I agree! I also see a little Harvey Korman in him!

reply

I could have sworn that was Harvey Korman when I first saw him. Funny but my wife thought Robin Williams as well....

reply

I knew I'd seen him somewhere in something, and I too thought he might be a Harvey Korman at first... then I realized he was "the guy from It's A Mad Mad Mad World."

I was never reminded of Robin Williams, I'll have to watch Shawn's scenes again with him in mind.
