Do only liberals like this movie?

I'm a liberal/socialist and find this film very funny. Do more right wing people not like it?
The context herewithin, is there was an English sitcom called To death us do part where the lead character was a right wing buffoon. However he somehow became a 'hero' of our right-wingers even though this was not the writer's intention.

reply

Well, I'm (generally) a conservative Republican and I think it's probably the funniest comedy I've ever seen. Just watched it again last night (for probably the 20th time).

Why couldn’t I be Governor of Idaho? Kill a few potatoes; who’d care?

reply

I don't understand the question. Everyone agreed that Hitler was a horrible person regardless of whether they were Rightwing or Leftwing, so why would it necessarily be likable to one group more than the other?

Shhhh! The OP probably only rarely emerges from his ideological cocoon. Don't frighten him.

reply

I think people who dislike this film are more likely to be those who feel hItler and the nazis were too horrific to be made fun of. I imagine these are as likely to be left wing as right wing.

Or people who just don't find it very funny.

reply

It’s just your last sentence in my case. I enjoyed HOGAN’S HEROES, but I just found this movie quite boring except for the fun “Springtime for Hitler” number.

reply

I don't know, but what I would really like to know is how popular this movie is in
Germany.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

"To Death Do Us Part" created one of the greatest American sitcoms of the time: All In The Family. With "Archie" (Carol O'Connor) being a right "wingnut" of the day and his son in-law "Michael-Meathead" (Rob Reiner) as the young right back in Archie's face liberal. Conservative or Liberal, Archie Bunker was beloved by both sides. By the way, a program that would not be allowed in it's past form to be shown on network TV today. All the synonyms/acronyms for political, social and especially nationalities would not pass any broadcast standards and practices due to the way society has changed in our world over forty plus years.

'Til death us to part was indeed a classic British sitcom. I have only seen clips of 'all in the family' but guess our show was even closer to the edge.
The idea was to make Alf Garnett (Archie) a figure of absolute ridicule, and so expose racists as fools. The trouble was, people some how found Alf lovable and took him to their hearts.
The actor who played him (brilliantly) once met a fan in the street. The fan said 'well done Alf, I loved the way you had a go at the c...s and the p...s last night' An angry Warren Mitchell (himself a jew)replied, 'you stupid so and so, I was having a go at you!!!'

If nazi germany had won showbiz would be like this, I'm in extacy.

reply

This has to be one of the most brilliant comedies ever produced.

I'm a classical liberal, but certainly not a liberal or progressive in the modern sense. I voted for Ron and Rand Paul in the Republican primaries each time they've ran for president, but have usually supported the Libertarian Party in general elections. And this movie is outstanding.

I don't want to make generalizations about an entire group, but I actually think that if it were released today many liberals would be complaining about the lack of political correctness. Conservatives can be just as bad about trying to destroy anything they get offended by (see the Dixie Chicks controversy, for example), but the two groups generally get offended by different things and The Producers strikes me as something that would be more likely to offend a liberal than a conservative.

I am not a "right winger," but I do notice you make the common mistake of associating the National Socialist Party with conservatism (even Wikipedia, that little darling of the CIA, makes this error). They are very, VERY different ideologies (conservatives, for instance, are not fans of gun control or censorship, as the National Socialists were).
