I hate to say this, but the ending in the remake was better than the one in original.

The one in the original was corny as hell.

I love both films.

Incorrect. :-P

The original ending is iconic and famous, imitated in everything from Spaceballs to Simpsons.

The remake ending (Tim Burton) was literally WTAF.

reply

And yet, the ending to Tim Burton's film is similar to the ending of the 1963 source novel by Pierre Boulle (except he lands in Paris in the novel). Which of course doesn't necessarily makes it the better ending.

reply

Being similar to the original material is not necessarily mandatory. Sometimes, the source material is good but not great and you can have a much better idea when adapting it. Good examples of that is 2001 space odyssei or the Godfather (book ok, movie is a masterpiece). The ending of the firm is pretty meh in the book while in the movie they end up with a super twist. Same as in this movie. I thought it was great and contemporaneous (fear of a nuclear holocaust). Honestly, I don't even remember the ending of the remake.

Abraham Lincoln became a monkey.

2001 wasn't adapted from a book. Clarke worked on his novel while working with Kubrick on the film; their development ran parallel to each other. Kubrick took the shared material where he wanted in the film, and Clarke took it where he wanted in the novel.

The final scene showing Taylor in front of the Statue of Liberty is iconical and a piece of cinema ´s history. The ending of the remake (2001) is good and I like it too.

reply

Agreed. Its just too far fetched to believe the Apes somehow managed to transport the Statue of Liberty to their planet

reply

Not if they all got together and used their psychic monkey powers. It would be possible then.

reply

... Or that apes - absolutely identical to those which had evolved on Earth - by chance came to Earth to transport that Statue of Liberty...

reply

I liked the original. It led us to believe that the apes rose up and evolved after the nuclear holocaust. That the holocaust was the catalyst of the new world order.
