Favorite lines/scenes from the film?

Mine are (some quotes may not be word-for-word perfect):

"He's so nervous he wears a seatbelt at a drive-in movie"!

Or, worried that Felix may have overdosed on tablets, Oscar says...

"They may have been vitamin pills. He could be the healthiest one in the room"!

When Oscar is trying to relax a very tense Felix...

"You're the only man in the world with clenched hair"!

Or...

FELIX: "In other words you want me to move out?"

OSCAR: "No not in *other* words...those are the perfect words"!!

Brilliant script to a brilliant film.

More lines...

"His refridgerator hasn't been working for 2 weeks. There's milk standing in it and it's not even in a bottle"!!

"Are you gonna tell us or do I have to hire a private detective?"!!

"What buffet? A warm pepsi and a sandwich left over from high school"!!

reply

Great subject!

Favorite scene? The "honking" scene at the diner! Leaves me in hysterics every time.

"We are all out of cornflakes. F.U. Took me three hours to figure out that F.U. stood for Felix Unger!!!"

The moon belongs to America!

reply

" Doesn't gravy just come from the meat ? "
" No, the gravy doesn't come from the meat, you gotta make the gravy ! "

reply

"We are all out of cornflakes. F.U. Took me three hours to figure out that F.U. stood for Felix Unger!!!
Breathtaking dialogue. I rewatched this last week and now, anyone who'll listen gets an earful of how "they haveta see this!". I tell them this quote. It works, even out of context and delivered by the non-funny.

Aside: I love spock too.

reply

I absolutely agree with both of these.

I have watched this movie over 100 times and still crack up when Felix is trying to clear his sinuses in the diner.

reply

"I haven't seen you this angry since the day I dropped my cigar in your pancake batter". Ash flavoured pancakes, nice.

The buffet line was "Hot beer and 2 sandwiches left over from when you went to high school." 😀

Those are some of the funniest lines! Here's another one:

Oscar (when the others are afraid Felix will attempt suicide in the bathroom): That's the kids' bathroom. The worst he could do in there is brush his teeth to death.

Also,

Murray "the cop" (about people who, like Felix, threaten suicide): We get these cases every day. All they want is a little sympathy. We've got a guy who calls us up every Saturday afternoon from the George Washington Bridge.

Also,

Felix (after Vinnie says that he and his wife are going to the park): You always do things like that together, don't you?
Vinnie: We have to. I don't know how to drive.

And, of course, during the poker game:

Murray: How many cards you got, four?
Speed: Yes, Murray, we all have four cards. If you gave us one more we'd all have five. If you gave us two more we'd all have six. Understand how it works now?

reply

After Felix complaining about being cold in the diner

Oscar -"Do you want me to order you a blanket?"

Poker player- 'Whats that smell?..sniff sniff.. Its the cards, he disinfected the cards...'

Out looking for Felix in the cop car

Murray- 'I'm really not supposed to use this car off duty, my bosses don't like it'

Oscar - 'So take it out of my taxes'

A couple of scenes that have always made me laugh the hardest had no lines:

The scene where Oscar comes in and, just to make Felix mad, he tosses the flowers out of the vase, knocks the picture on the wall crooked, wipes his shoes on the curtains and steps up and walks all over the couch.

The other one is where Felix is winding up the cord to the vacuum and he sees Oscar standing on the cord. So he winds the cord up around his arm and just as he starts to jerk it, it cuts to the shot of Oscar and he just lifts his leg up and you hear the huge crash in the kitchen. For some reason that image of Walter Matthau standing there with his hands in his pockets, just looking around casually and lifting his foot just before you hear that crash always kills me.

As far as I'm concerned, the funniest movie ever made. Period.

reply

This is a small line, but I found it hilarious!

While nervously conversing with the Pigeon twins, Felix yells:
"Oscar!"
in desperation.

LOL!

reply

Absolutely agree...probably because I can relate to that feeling.

reply

Felix is crying with the Cuckoo Pigeon sisters and Oscar walks in with the tray of drinks, "Is everybodt happy?!?" Then he sits down and takes a drink

reply

'Why doesn't he hear me? I know I'm talking, I recognize my voice.'

Oh man, and when that Pigeon sister pulls her head back really fast to avoid having Felix snap her cigarette in the lighter again, I just lose it! I've already worn out two VHS copies and now I'm on the DVD. I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching this movie. It's such a riot!

And if you thought Walter Matthau was funny as Oscar, you have to see him as Willie Clark in 'The Sunshine Boys' He was the funniest curmudgeon the big screen has ever seen. Forget that Grumpy Old Men crap, see 'The Sunshine Boys' it may be his best performance ever.

reply

Felix: "It's linguini!"

Oscar (as it hits the wall): "Now it's garbage!"

reply

That's my favorite line, too

reply

I always enjoyed the simple line at the end, when Felix is closing the door to the apartment behind him: "Marriages may come and go, but the game must go on. So long, Francis." We don't know if Felix called Oscar 'Francis' as a mistake (like he did earlier in the film) or if he said if affectionatley to Oscar. Either way, it is a great line.

reply

Oscar "We are all out of Corn Flakes, F.U. It took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Unger"

Oscar "You are not going anywhere until you take that back"
Felix "Take what back?"
Oscar "Let it be on your head. What the hell is that? The curse of the cat people?"

"Spoon! A ha you dumb ignoramus, that is a ladle, you did not know that's a ladle!" - a truly classic Lemmon line

Thank you Ryan Hunt. I've always wondered how you spell that. But that's my favorite line too.

reply

Then right after Felix is done honking:

Oscar: Did it open up?
Felix: Uh-huh, I think I sprained my throat.

reply

Felix's ex-wife's name is Frances. Old habits die hard.

reply

Favourite Scene - 'Linguini'...

Favourite Quote - Oscar: "Murray, I'll give you $200 for your gun."

"Women remember, Steve - it's like they've got minds of their own!"

reply

Roy: (picks up a rotten banana peel in the trash) Ya know this is the same garbage from last week's game, I'm beginning to recognize things.

Vinnie: I make you nervous, you make me nervous, you make everyone nervous!
Murray: I'm sorry forgive, I'll kill myself!!
(in the presense of Felix who tried to kill himself earlier)
Oscur: MURRAY!!!!!
Murray: I'm sorry!
Felix: (looking out the window) Gee sure is pretty from up here. What is it 12 floors?
Oscur: No it's 11 floors, it's 11 floors....(closes window) Says 12 but it's really only 11.

Oscur: Why do you havta control everything that happens in your life. Do something you FEEL like doing, not something you're SUPPOSED to do! Stop controlling yourself Felix! Get drunk, get angry....come on break the lousy cup!
(Felix throws the cup)
Felix: Ahhh I hurt my arm!
Oscur: You're hopeless, you're a hopeless mentalcase! ...... Go live in the closet I'll slide the meals under the door!

Later...

Oscur: It's 12 floors not 11!!!

All I can think of off the top of my head, hopefully none of those have been mentioned yet.

This is definitely a great topic. My hat's off to the person who started this thread.

OK, that's long enough (puts hat back on).

Anyway, here are some of my favorite lines:

Oscar: "Life goes on even for those of us who are divorced, broke and sloppy." - picks up phone — "Hello, divorced, broke and sloppy!"

Hotel cleaning lady, as Felix is about to go into his room: "Goodnight."
Felix — "Goodbye." (Lady looks at him strangely)

Pigeon sister, after Felix has told them that he writes the news for TV: "Oh, well maybe you could mention Gwen and me in one of your stories."

Felix: "Well, you do something spectacular and maybe I will."

Sister: "Oh, Gwen and I have done some spectacular things, but I'm not sure we want it spread all over the tele, do we Gwen?"
