Humor with an underlaying streak of tragedy.

It's been a long time since I was drawn into a movie like this and watched it from start to finish. As an introduction to old-school burlesque, this film can't be beat! However, there are three things about it which left me with a feeling of sadness:

1. Rachel Schpitendavel's lost innocence and:
2. Chick Williams' broken heart when Rachel switched from him to Raymond Paine, flippantly and without any concern for their friendship.
3. Jacob Schpitendavel's shock and dismay at what his daughter turned into right before his eyes, partly because of his grabbing (and ripping) her dress. Say what you will, he was a decent, honest man despite his severe tone.

Such is life and such are some women though.
