Not sure if it's this film

I saw a film when I was a lot younger (I was born in 66) about a mission to a planet where they encountered a fiery ball, a few of the astronauts died in this ball which I seem to remember sucked them in, some survived and made it back.

I'm not sure whether the planet was Mars, I just remember astronauts being burnt by this ball which opened some sort of door and sucked them in. It gave me many a nightmare and i'd love to see it again.

Anybody help me with the name of the film?

jamie-813,

SPOILERS ALERT!!!

You're right on, this is the movie you're trying to recollect. The strange alien Mars ball opens up and swallows a dead American astronaut. At the end of the movie, Nick Adams sacrifices himself by walking into the open ball and screaming at the top of his lungs. Evidently his screaming freaks out the machine ball because it promptly explodes so violently that nothing is left of it. The surviving astronaut, Darren McGavin (of later 1974 Nightstalker tv series fame) blasts off the Mars surface with the surviving Soviet cosmonaut who was found frozen on the planet's surface but later revived. It was a cheesy, low-budget sci-fi film of its time but like you, I found it interesting to watch at the time.

Wow... lm glad l read this... l was born in 1964 and remember seeing this at a seaside town hall cinema when on holidays- it was part of a double-feature program, the main feature being Walt Disneys 'MILLION DOLLAR DUCK". Talk about bizarre programming!
I was probably only about 8 or 10 years old but feeling very grown-up, l left my parents up the back rows and sat up front all by myself.. that is until the huge silver ball opend up and a red beam burn a hole in the astronauts heart and his dead body slithered into the ball...l went screaming back up the aisle and think l had nightmares for a week! I also never forgot that picture although its name eluded me all these years- until now!
Im dead keen to see it again now- lm sure l would cry with laughter these-days. Thanks for jogging the memory and providing the title- lm off to the video shop! Cheers from Australia :-)

Just found this response Jamie... shows how often l log-on! lol
I must have only been about 10 years old when l saw this- and it totally freaked me out and gave me nightmares. I would love to see it again now at the (slightly more mature) age of 45- l would probably wet myself from laughing! Cheers :-)

It wasn't just his screaming, as I recall he took some kind of gun or bomb with him. They couldn't attack it successfully from outside, so he got it to open up and took something with him that killed it from the inside.
