I’ve seen them both several times before but tonight I watched them back to back and I’m thinking my vote might go to The Mercenary. Nero is excellent in both but Palance as Curley in Mercenary was excellent, and what an epic death scene! Morricone’s score is amazing one I need to search it out in vinyl soon. The cinematography also seems superior here.
The only dislike I have of the Mercenary is I just wish Corbucci had lingered in his scenes a bit longer. Much of the film seems a bit rushed with almost too much action. Another 30 minutes of run time for extra length in many scenes would be perfect. There are several absolutely beautiful shots with great landscapes and sky that unfortunately seem to only last a couple of seconds.
Both are great Corbucci films with wonderful actors but on second thought, damn that's a great ending gun fight in Companeros with the theme song blaring and then Nero stealing the statue during the ceremony then...... Nevermind.
I'm glad I don't have to decide. :)
