A Second Run employee said today (on the criterion forum) that Marketa Lazarova WILL be released in 2007. Let's hope so!

According to a post on the Masters of Cinema site, Second Run DVD is planning to bring 'Markéta Lazarová' out by summer's end (2006).

Czech film?

There is a movement towards transfering the film in 2K high-definition from the original camera negative, instead of using the positive element used to create the current transfer that is/was to be used for the DVD. You can see comparisons of the two transfers here:

It's an amazing film in every way and deserves the very best transfer.

ive seen the comparisons and the new transfer is really great....hope to see this great movie on second run dvd! even though i rarely buy PAL DVDS and it is very cumbersome for me to order this kind (PAL) of dvds

reply

I bought two dvds from Second Run via their website. They were approx. $25 each, a price that included shipping, and the films arrived a week after I ordered them (I've made domestic orders that took longer). So I highly recommend that anybody interested in this film visit the Second Run website periodically for updates (although it may take awhile with Marketa Lazarova, there are several other worthwhile Czech New Wave releases that are worth buying).
Again, their dvds are region-free, but you do have to be able to play PAL-format (if you have a PC, then you're probably set).

reply

I might have to check that out. I've never bought a PAL dvd before, but it might be necessary (if only to be played on my computer) for this movie. I've discovered the Czech New Wave recently. So far I've only seen Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (which was pretty good), and I'm currently watching Valley of the Bees (which is amazing so far).

reply

If you're getting into Czech New Wave, you should definitely check out Jiri Menzel's _Closely Watched Trains_ and Milos Forman's _Firemen's Ball_. These are two of the best-known (for good reason) New Wave films.

reply

Both of them are in my Blockbuster queue. Thanks for the tip.
