Marketa Lazarova - DVD launch

4.11.2007

Voted the best Czech film ever made, Frantisek Vlacil’s 1967 film Marketa Lazarova is a powerful and passionate medieval epic set in the mid-13th Century. Based on avant-garde writer Vladislav Vancura’s novel, it follows the rivalry between two warring clans and the doomed love affair. Re-creating an authentic world and owing as much to Bergman and Kurosawa as it does to the rich tapestry of Czech fiction, this ambitious and multi-layered film is the crowning achievement of Vlacil’s career and one of the undiscovered cornerstones of world cinema. With Josef Kemr, Frantisek Velecky, Magda Vasaryova and Ivan Paluch.

I recently assessed this film before it went off to be mastered onto DVD. I hope you enjoy it, the soundtrack has been improved (many crackles and pops have been removed) though the sync was out in places on the version I checked (I think that this was because the film was post dubbed originally), the picture has been treated too (though I didn't see the original so I can't tell by how much) I didn't see any major scratches or dirt. The contrast is still very high, I believe this is intentional as the contrast has been noted on another thread.
I am afraid I didn't understand it much as I do not speak the language and if there are subtitles to be put on the DVD they would have not been available when I saw it. It was ashame as it looked like something I could have enjoyed more.
Maybe I will get the DVD.

I've seen the final transfer (or at least the first half), and Lakeywhite's comments pretty much match what I saw - though I had the advantage of subtitles.

I suspect the sound-sync issues are inherent in the film - in the Sixties, it was very common indeed to shoot large-scale films silently and create the entire soundtrack in the studio afterwards, and Vlacil's camera choreography is so elaborate that I imagine he avoided getting microphones in shot by the simple expedient of not having them at all. Certainly, anyone familiar with the 1960s work of, say, Federico Fellini or Sergio Leone will know what to expect.

(and it's not as though there's much onscreen dialogue in the film to begin with - you don't see the speaker that often)

I also back up the comments about the print being in surprisingly good condition - there are a few blemishes, but certainly nothing major, and the images are so dense and the camera so mobile that these really aren't an issue. The contrast is indeed high at times, but several shots are damn near perfect, so this may well have been intentional.

Anyway, short of someone stumping up the estimated six-figure cost of a restoration from the original negative, this is probably the best it's going to get for the time being - and it's certainly better than any current DVD release of 'Andrei Rublev' (the film that's probably closest in visuals and overall tone).
