I wish they still made them like this....

I have watched this movie 3 times since I bough it last week because it took me that long to grasp the movie for what it is. But damn this movie was awesome. I wish movies now a days were still this good. Any think this movie is a under the radar masterpiece? Any good film comparisons to this one? I say Andrei Rublev is the closest to another film I think is like Marketa.

I bought the Criterion blu ray and saw this film for the first time yesterday. I loved it, the atmosphere, the story, the eroticism. I have not seen Andrei Rublev yet, but this film most reminded me of the Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman, a masterpiece in my opinion.

I was lost a bit with the plot, but the visuals and feel was amazing. I'd say for 1976 it's a masterpiece visually and it terms of bleak grit.

Andrei Rublev (1966) and Marketa Lazarova (1967) are almost like companion pieces. Both came out at almost the same time, picturing the same historical era. Both black and white, and shot in gritty realistic, yet poetic style. And both terribly long. These two would make a great double feature, wouldn't they?
