Why in the world were 70mm prints made of this movie? And for which markets? I am curious if anyone has any background information on this.

LOL I'm assuming you saw the American version. Here in the US the film was cut by about 20 minutes and horribly dubbed. Purportedly the full length Spanish language film is much better. I also heard, when it was originally released in Spain, it was in 70mm, stereo sound AND 3-D (which explains some of the strange shots).
