Fantasy Island (1978)

Does anyone see connections between The Magus, both as a book and as a film, and the original inspiration behind the 1978 television show called Fantasy Island, starring the late Ricardo Montalban?

I'm not talking about the corny and cheesy show that Fantasy Island was to become, but the original concept and pilot, which to my mind had a more dark and serious tone.

Am I just imagining things or seeing stuff that isn't there, or was Mr. Rourke a version of Maurice Conchis?
