The ending (spoilers)

I have this film taped for about 3 years and have watched it at least 5 times.

There is something I can't quite understand.
When John cries "I am a pacifist" and is shot nonetheless, what was that about?
I admit I wasn't expecting that.

Was he not recognised as being on their side or did they shoot him without trying to identify him first?

The ending is a bit shocking.

This is a great film, original, thrilling, even though I am not into War films very much, I love it.

I think I must have one of those faces you can't help believing.
