How did people discover this film?

I was flicking through some Italian satellite channels & just chanced on this little gem about 10 years ago & always wondered why it hasn`t got a higher profile. As a reviewer pointed out it doesn`t seem to be available on any commercial format & certainly hasn`t been on U.K. tv in the last 20 years or so-indeed it`s country of origin seems to have totally forgotten about it which is a shame.

Personally, I saw this film more than 20 years ago on ITV, back when it used to screen late-night, post watershed, adult themed movies. Like yourself, I've never seen it screened or advertized anywhere since. It struck me that contacting ITV might have been a possible starting place for tracking down this movie, but i never followed through with this theory. I did buy an old second hand copy of the book a long time ago, which must have been printed to co-incide with it's release by Paramount, at the time. Hope this isn't telling you stuff you already know?

reply

If you do manage to obtain a copy I`d be interested to know what you think of the film now-it certainly isn`t everyone`s cup of tea but I just found it so unusual & intriguing.I`ll keep a look out for the book as I`m also curious if there are any particular & important differences compared to the film.

Just glad that someone answered my question & always interested in any more info about this one.Thanks.

If you're mad keen to hoover up the book, then I'll see if i can dig it out for you. If find it I'll let you know and that'll save you trawling second hand book shops for, what is almost certainly, an out of print war story- sound fair??

reply

It does sound fair-have you managed to pick up a copy of the film yet?

reply

Yes I am one that would love to see this movie. It is supposed to be one of David hemmings best performances. It is too bad that the public is overwhelmed with low grade actors who are not qualified to be on screen . quality movies like this one are totally forgotten. I saw David for the first time around 3 months ago in the movie Blowup, I realize he had exceptional acting ability, and need to see all of his movies.

Thanks

I remember seeing this unusual film in the theater, when it was first released. I had seen a preview of the film when viewing another movie, and made a point of going to see it. It was so different, it remains stuck in my memory after all these years.

I saw it at the Center Theater, on Main Street on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In those days (late 1960's), a current feature film would run at the Center from Thursdays to the next Wednesday for one week only, then another film would replace it. Every Saturday, a different film (not the running feature) was screened at the afternoon matinee, for one showing only -- and that was the only chance you had to see whatever it was.

A buddy of mine had worked his way down to St. Thomas and stayed with my family for an extended visit, and was flying home the day after "The Long Day's Dying" was showing. I tried to persuade him to go with me to see it, but he wouldn't, as he "had to pack." I went by myself -- the only time I've ever seen the movie.

Funny, the things you remember.

I just saw this film on Netflix and it's certainly not a popcorn type of movie.
At first I thought with only four actors it was for economical reasons but it's deeper than that.
I never realized that some of the actors couldn't act because I was caught up in the moment. The various episodes always kept me busy with the plot. I suspected the ending and I was right.
It should be watched, especially by hawks who are all to eager to attack other countries because they believe it is justified.

Holy Netflix actually has great movies like this I thought they only have mainstream classics Hollywood etc..

I saw this on Showcase channel in Canada 15yrs ago (when the channel was good) it's like a mature artsy channel.

Saw it at a one-time Saturday matinee showing at the old Center Theater on Main Street on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in the summer of 1970.
