Michele Carey

There has been some harsh criticism regarding her voice. If you watch her perform in previous films and TV shows, you will find that she actually has a husky voice. It was the director that asked her to talk with the silly accent which in my opinion only added to the movie as she was playing such a quirky role.

As she progressed through her career she sometimes used the "baby" voice depending on her role. Watch her in Gunsmoke or Alias Smith and Jones or in It takes a Thief as she really uses that accent to her advantage. In the movie Changes which came out the same year, she did noe have the baby voice.

There were two women that Elvis wanted to play the role of Bernice, one was Michele who he had watched in the John Wayne movie El Dorado and loved her work as Joey. The other was Sally Field but she was not available at the time for the shooting of the movie.

I cannot think of any actress better suited for the role of Bernice unless you went with a very young and less experienced Goldie Hawn.

Michele is you read this, you did a great job! Love ya.

I don't know why anyone would criticize her voice at all. To me, it resembles Elizabeth Taylor's voice -- very refined, with a slight British tone to it.
