Haven't seen it decades

I just watched it and still think it's good

It's definitely closest to the Christmas spirit next to Nestor, the long eared donkey.

Yikes, my two least favorite Christmas specials. The little drummer boy sees his parents slaughtered in front of him and then has to play the drum they gave him for a gift just to eat and with a smile painted on his face.

Nestor watches his mother die when she protects him from the freezing cold by shielding him with her body.

WTF?

Good points. I was an adult when I saw the little drummer boy (released before my time) but I'd imagine a 3-4 year old would have trouble reconciling his parents' murder in a holiday movie. I was 4 when Nestor was broadcast and I don't recall having strong feelings about his mother dying. In fact I had forgotten that tidbit until I watched it recently. The Cricket on the Hearth has a similar dark murder on board a ship that surprised me while watching it.

Embarrassing but true story.. I was on a business trip (I was in my 40s then) and while I was getting dressed at the hotel, Nestor was on. I started to tear up when he found his mother dead the next morning... That was the last time I saw it.
