I WANT THIS ON DVD!!

I already know that there has never been a U.S. release of this film on DVD. There was a 1993 release on VHS - but that transfer is terrible!!! I have seen quite a few bootleg DVDs but they just contain the US VHS release transfer to DVD - which of course still looks awful. Does anyone know is there was ever a DVD release in Japan? I would take it even if it did not have subtitles.

And Criterion - get your act together! This is one of the best movies ever.

Yes. It is one of the films included in the Fukasaku box sets (available at amazon.jp). Off-hand I can't remember if it's volume 1 or 2, but it doesn't have any subtitles.

Well I've requested it years ago & it's certainly better than Hausu, but I gave up hope....and now it's available on Hulu on Criterion's channel, so there is still a chance.

Really?! That's interesting. I suppose you have to pay for it with a Hulu Plus subscription to watch it though?

Actually, the version on Hulu+ is the 1962 Umetsugu Inoue original. This is a remake. I have just realized this after thinking for the last 6 months that the version I watched was directed by the Battle Royale guy.
