Criterion Blu-Ray

For some unknown reason, Criterion is releasing this movie along with Goke: Body Snatcher From Hell & X From Outer Space!!! On Blu-Ray no less!

Go figure that one out.

reply

they are all part of an eclipse box set. i believe these are only dvd releases, eclipse has not done any releases on bluray yet.

reply

Hi prbronx -- The next poster is correct: the set is not on Blu-ray, only DVD. Eclipse sets are all only DVD.

If, given these titles, that makes a real difference!

I placed identical posts about the set on the sites for each of its four films. Anyway, it sounds like fun.

See you.

the eclipse box set horror from shockichu is an excellent addition to the eclipse series esp the horror films that criterion has put out

reply

It's also fun to watch Criterion turn somersaults trying to make these films sound like some complex art-house classics, as they do with most of their sci-fi films. They're just fun stuff to watch. I have the set but haven't watched any of the films yet.

reply

i watched the first 2 films in the set and they were great fun. cant wait too watch the other 2. they look great btw, love how criterion shows love for the j-horror. kuroenko is one of my favorite blurays of the ones theyve put out. its a great film and looks fabulous on bluray. im now waiting for an upgrade of kwaidan!! hopefull soon :)

reply

And I've been so busy I still haven't watched one! But I'm staring at the box even now, so one day soon...! (Even my wife is bugging me to watch them.) But thanks for the heads-up about their quality.

Do you know the Criterion (not Eclipse) box set "Monsters and Madmen"? Four fun films, my favorite of which is The Atomic Submarine. As this Eclipse set shows, it's nice to know they can loosen up sometimes. I have Kuroenko too, and as I mentioned, Godzilla, though they should have called him Gojira.

reply

yes, ive been wanting that one for a while but the only film ive seen from it is the haunted strangler which i put on netflix a few yrs back. it was a great film. sadly i havnt had the chance to buy godzilla (gojira) yet but i have seen the film. 2 more of my favorites that criterion put out are carnival of souls, if you havnt seen it thats another great film but im sure you have and house is one of my favorite criterion films. (im sure uve seen that one also) but if you havnt its another great one.

reply

You know, I haven't seen House and should. But I well know Carnival of Souls and I'm glad Criterion issued it, given all the lousy PD prints out there.

Criterion's edition of Godzilla is of course good but so was the Classic Media set (still available). Of course Criterion is a bit more painstaking in its restoration, and they do have the first fully restored print of Godzilla King of the Monsters with it. (The CM disc of GKOTM was slightly lacking, with the opening logo still missing and the closing credits edited in in reverse.) One day I may post a comparison of the two sets on the film's IMDb site.

If you can get to a Barnes & Noble, they hold twice-yearly sales on all Criterion discs at an amazing 50% off (you probably know this). This includes Eclipse titles too. With a membership card you get an additional 10% off the sale price, or 55% off overall. That's when to buy. The "Monsters and Madmen" set retails for $79.99 but with the full B&N discount it's just $35.99. I'm sure you'd like all the movies in that set. Unfortunately they just finished their most recent sale but there should be another one in the late spring. I got the "Shochiku" set for $26.99 instead of $59.99.

reply

oh man u have to see house, its arguably a masterpiece and if ur into the eclipse shochiku set its def something you would appreciate. and yes i just finished my haul at B&n a week ago and got some great titles. i was holding off for a while because i knew it was going to happen sometime the end of this year. the local b&n i go to did not have monsters and madmen in stock sadly but i did pick up some great titles. i am a member also.

i got the shochiku set of course
rosemarys baby blu
weekend blu (godard)
eating raoul blu
heavens gate blu
down by law blu (been holding off forever on that one)
the game blu
& rashomon on blu
i should have got godzilla blu and ive been wanting monsters and madmen for a while and i think that the next sale those 2 will be in my hands lol.

but house is a for sure title i highly recommend for you. thnkx for the monsters and madmen rec, it will def be one of the next ones i get next.

btw i started watching the living skeleton and its another great one so far.

i think the shochiku set might be my favorite eclipse set so far right next to the r downey sr set. the nikatsu noir set is great also.

reply

I also used the sale to get Rosemary's Baby, Eating Raoul, Rashomon and Weekend. (Funny that Criterion would come out with two films called "Weekend" within a few weeks of each other. But I also mean the French film.)

If a B&N doesn't have a title in stock they'll order it for you at the 50% discount, although you won't get the extra membership 10% because it's an order and not in-store...or something. No big deal in the scheme of things.

The reviews of this movie on this site are certainly terrible! Well, we'll see.

One of these days I'm going to do my own Criterion Top 10 list, which will reveal how unsophisticated and un-Criterion I truly am!

reply

haha nice, snds like me and you totally took advantage of the sale. and it also seems we have alot of the same tastes in film. i just got the new brazil bluray yesterday, best buy has it for 20 bux not bad for a 2-discer. the quality is superb, dnt pay attention to bluray.com rewiew its much better than the universal and its the directors cut. only thing that irked me was that the both copies they had the cases were totally cracked, not that big a deal tho.

ive been meaning to do my top 10 i just always end up not being being satisfied enough w my list so i dnt post it lol.

reply

Yeah, every month the Criterion newsletter has that feature of someone you never heard of giving his top-ten list. (I think they should ask David Letterman, but that's another matter.) I figure, my list is as good as these guys' lists. Of the ones I've read, they seem to be desperately trying to weigh their lists down with titles that sound the deepest, most significant, most arty (though they wouldn't say that), and the most non-English-language so that they can cover themselves with a veneer of urbanity, cultural elitism and faux-film-scholarship as cinematic sophisticates to be envied (if never fully understood) by we lesser folk.

Not that I don't have my own issues, but a lot of these people are just so self-evidently full of themselves it's laughable. But I guess Criterion has issues of its own...a few stray releases of things like The Blob, Fiend Without a Face and When Horror Came to Shochiku notwithstanding!

But I know what you mean about not being satisfied with your own top ten. Personally I always come up with about 18 on my top ten list.

reply

I'd have bought this on BluRay if it had been released in that medium. I'm glad it's available now in the U.S. Guess they'll release a BluRay someday.

reply

Hi OP. Get your shat together. Eclipse, not Criterion. DVD, not blu-ray. Don't you love it when people make grandiose statements but they are really talking through their @$$? Stupidity, no less!

Go figure that one out.
