Anyone know where I can get the AIP dub?

I'm looking to get the original version that I saw as a kid (the AIP dub). I don't like the new dub at all. Anyone know where I can get the older dubbed version on either VHS or DVD?

You know, someone out there must have a 16mm print of this, from those early TV broadcasts of it. So far, the only AIP dub I've found has been, believe it or not, the little 10 minute digest version that was put out in Super 8 for home movie use during the pre-vcr era of the 1970s. A little company called Ken Films, in Fort Lee, NJ, released a number of AIP/Toho films (GODZILLA VS. THE THING, FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, WAR OF THE GARGANTUA, GHIDRAH, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, etc.) and a couple of non-Toho kaiju films, like MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET (aka GAPPA), YONGARY, etc. I found the Super 8 film, still in original box, at a dealer's both a few years ago...before DESTROY ALL MONSTERS was rescued from oblivion and finally shown on the Sci-Fi Channel and given a VHS/DVD release. Still looks and plays ok, but (unfortunately) it is only a reel of highlights.

If I hear of anyone who has a print, I'll let you know. For years, NO ONE had the film. I remember, as a kid, it showed up on TV on a fairly regular basis, then vanished after the early 1980s. Finally, over a decade and a half later, the Sci-Fi Channel ran the current version we have. I was just glad to see ANY copy of it again! (I recall people were starting to refer to this as the "lost" Godzilla movie.) One possible place to check would be E-Bay, as often obscure items show up there. I recall a buddy of mine finding the original Japanese cut of GODZILLA (with no Raymond Burr) there a few years ago.

I have a nice copy of the AIP version I got from a Japanese collector about 10 years ago. I can make either a VHS or a DVD from you. Email me if still interested (I know this was an old post!).

What is the big difference between the dubs? Better voice overs?

reply

Yes, it's a better dub. The so-called "International" dub done by Toho for the English language market was basically done by non-professional people rounded up for the occasion who happened to speak English, and the translation of the script was poor. OTOH, the AIP dub was done by professionally trained voice actors in New York like Hal Linden and the English script much better.

Happily, the new release on DVD and Blu-Ray gives us BOTH dubs plus the Japanese language track. For those who get the new release the "International" dub is English track #1, while the AIP dub is English track #2.

This is really good to hear. I remember reading a few years ago about how all the films had been re-dubbed, and gthe new dubs were "worse" than the original dubs. I mean, WHY wohuld anyone do that?

I've been putting up with the AIP dub for ages, but taped off a local station that, annoyingly, CUT OUT about the first third of the climactic monster battle! (The battle started when Ghidrah arrived, and I KNOW there was more before that.)
