The nuclear reactor: Looking at fission?


How realistic was the representation of the reactor window when they look at the fission while operating? Do such windows excist? Are they as big as shown in the film? and what would one see if one looked at a reactor working?

It might have been a way to look at the reactor vessel but it would be heavily shielded and surrounded by lagging, too, and the control rod drive mechanisms. Such 'windows' would be used to make sure there aren't any steam leaks.
