Lyrics?

Anyone have any idea of the lyrics to the theme song by Harper's Bizarre? I would really like to have them, I have tried to make them out but maybe I need a few of Alice's brownies before attempting to interpret them!!

I can't find any lyrics to it either -- I'm guessing you've tried too. I don't have a copy of the movie on hand, but what I can remember, the chorus of the oft-played theme is:

"ILYABT!
And so does Gertrude Stein [sometimes "Harold Fine"]
ILYABT!
I'm going to change your name to mine."

I also recall, in the verse, "sweet cannabis sativa, sweet sativa", "sentimental nutmeg" (itself also a psychoactive, but recommended by practically no one who's tried it), and a mention of coriander. It seems to be a list of the ingredients in the inedible-sounding hashish fudge recipe reprinted in The ABT Cookbook (submitted not by Alice but a male painter friend of hers, himself a friend of William Burroughs). The back story on that:

The original recipe is here:

(Note that the cookbook was originally published by Harper's -- hence H. Bizarre, or just coincidence?)

If you want a copy of the song you can find it in Harpers Bizarre: Extended 4. I also heard that a band called Blades of Grass did a cover of it back in the day.

Jane-Lane's post was pretty hip.

I think the 'Blades Of Grass' did a groovier job on this one than HB.

It is on the "HARPERS BIZARRE 4" album. Aparently a different version to the movie. You can hear a snippet on amazon.com

Here are the lyrics as well as the song writing credits:

Credits: "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas" (Mazurski/Tucker/Bernstein):

Lyrics:

I love you, Alice B. Toklas, and so does Gertrude Stein
I love you, Alice B. Toklas, I'm gonna change your name to mine

See all the trees and lions, pretty lions
Maybe witches, playing pitchy-me, spinning rainbows in light
Green moody golden gardens, morning gardens
For Leanda baby elephants sing Silent Night

Sweet sentimental nut cake shake the farer
Let the Tijuana corner grow
Clean canyons for Sativa, sweet Sativa
Cho-ca-latte mountain snow

It is better to be kind than to be clever or good looking. -- Derek
